Delhi, India’s capital, has a long and prestigious history. It was controlled by rulers who were among the most powerful in Indian history. The city’s history is as old as the Mahabharata epic. Indraprastha was the name of the town where the Pandavas used to live. Indraprastha was soon joined by eight other cities: LalKot, Siri, Dinpanah, Quila RaiPithora, Ferozabad, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad, and Shahjahanabad.

For almost five centuries, Delhi has been a witness to political instability. After the Khiljis and Tughlaqs, it was governed by the Mughals. The Afghan warrior Muhammad of Ghori’s armies seized the Rajput town in 1192, and the Delhi Sultanate was created (1206). Timur’s invasion of Delhi in 1398 brought the sultanate to an end; the Lodis, the last of the Delhi sultans, gave way to Babur, who formed the Mughal Empire following the battle of Panipat in 1526. The early Mughal rulers preferred Agra as their city, and it was only after Shah Jahan erected the walls of Old Delhi (1638) that Delhi became their permanent seat.

City rule went from one king to another, from Hindu Kings to Muslims. The city’s soil is filled with sacrifice, and patriotism. Ancient ‘Havelis’ and buildings are quiet, yet their silence reveals much about their owners and the people who lived here centuries ago.

The year 1803, the British captured the city. In 1911, the British relocated their capital from Calcutta to Delhi. It had become the focal focus of all governing action once more. On the other side, the city has a history of deposing its rulers. It included past and present British and Indian political parties who have had the honour of ruling a free India.
