Set the Stage for a Harry Potter Reading Party

Once you and your friends have left the bookstore after midnight with your copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows under your arm, you will need to have a place to read. Consider hosting a Harry Potter reading party at your home, beginning after midnight and finishing whenever you finish the novel or need to fall asleep. Create the right atmosphere in your home with simple décor and a selection of foods right out of the Harry Potter series.

Bring every comfortable chair in your home into the room you plan on reading in. Add a few piles of pillows and soft blankets for snuggling. Encourage your guests to bring their own reading lights so you can keep the lighting dim. Pull out your Christmas lights and Halloween direction and string white lights haphazardly around your reading room and add spiders, witches hats, plastic cauldrons, and spooky decor.

Have bowl of Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans available on tables fans for your friends to snack on as they devour each page of the final Harry Potter book. Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans are basically jelly beans, but in the wizarding world, in addition to cherry, orange, and licorice, you also chance tasting ear wax, liver, baked beans, or vomit. Some stores sell packages of Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans, made by Jelly Belly, which feature the weird and unusual flavors in the Harry Potter books. Also, they won’t break your budget. Even if you cannot find Bernie Botts Every Flavour Beans, in a store near you, a bag of Jelly Bellys or other gourmet jelly beans will keep your guests guessing about the flavors.

A favorite of Hogwarts students, mugs of foaming Butterbeer will be a tasty beverage to serve to your guests. Butterbeer is described to have a slight butterscotch flavor and since there are no butterscotch flavored sodas on the market, you can make your own as follows:

  1. Microwave 1 cup of butterscotch syrup and 1 tablespoon of butter in a microwave safe bowl for 1 minute stirring halfway through. Remove and stir for one minute until slightly cooled.
  1. Add 4 cups (32 oz.) of cream soda, slowly. This tasty brew will foam and fizz like a true wizard concoction. Pour into four coffee mugs.
  1. Top with a dollop of whipped cream and serve.

Pumpkin is a popular ingredient in many foods at Hogwarts and the surrounding wizarding communities. Provide pumpkin muffins or pumpkin bread with apple butter or whipped cream cheese to serve them with as a hearty middle of the night snack.

Since Book 7 in the series is over 700 pages long, your Harry Potter party will likely last into the morning. Serve up the hearty, country home cooking Harry enjoyed in Molly Weasley’s kitchen for breakfast. A simple pan of fried eggs, with pan fried sausages, served with toast and butter will sustain your fellow readers.
