outdoor styling inspiration severine piller design

Even the smallest balcony or terrace can become a cool and chic oasis with a little decorating here and there. Adding some furniture, textiles and a splash of color can turn a dull outdoor space into the perfect place to relax on warm summer evenings!

4 rules severine piller design

One of the easiest, and most attractive things you can add to your balcony or terrace are green plants and trees. Consider buying flower boxes with holders and hanging planters if you have a tiny outdoor space but even the smallest balcony has space for a potted plant or two! I actually grow basil, coriander, mint, sage and thyme in my flower box and I love having a little herb garden at home…

Instead of chairs, create a bench (IKEA’s Kungsholmen footstool is prefect!) that is more comfortable and add stools that you can stack in a corner when you have friends or family over. Go with furniture that tolerates weather elements (since it it can rain and snow a lot!), pieces that clean easily are another good choice.

Use colors! I work on outdoor projects the same way as any other; I start by setting a neutral background (floor, wall, bench) and then add pops of colors. I’m really into Moroccan textiles and decor so I would add a cool colored blanket (ALWAYS have a blanket, handy for when it gets chilly, nothing worse than having to stop an outdoor party because of cold feet!), nice pillows and some colored accents here and there.

Light it up. Get your outdoor oasis a little light with candles, lanterns and battery-run (or solar) light garlands. The soft light will give the space the perfect romantic feel.

And here’s a little inspiration for this summer…
