Marie Kondo’s method of decluttering homes and workplaces is now a global phenomenon known as the ‘KonMari’ method. Marie has a bestselling book “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and a hit Netflix show “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”. Packing up an old house (especially one full of family memories) can be emotional and stressful, so using Marie’s methods of decluttering and packing up can help to reduce stress during your move so you can enjoy your new home once you arrive.
The KonMari Method
The KonMari method of decluttering includes grouping household items together so that you can go through them and establish which ones “spark joy” and which should be donated or discarded. The categories include:
These groupings can also be applied to how you pack, which makes sense as certain delicate items should be packed with more protection and handled with more care. As sentimental items are usually more delicate, these should be done last so they can be placed at the front of the van, or at the top of the piles of boxes, ensuring they don’t get crushed.
It’s important to complete each category before moving on to the next one to remain organised and ensure that items are packed into boxes by category. This will also make life easier when you unpack in your new home. For example, all your clothes will be together so those boxes can be moved into the bedroom/closet ready to be unpacked.
Make sure that you place everything you will need during your move in to a suitcase or backpack (depending on how much you have) so that it doesn’t mistakenly get packed into boxes with the rest of your things. That way you can have easy access to documents, toiletries and snacks that you will need on moving day.
Save Time & Money
As you are donating so many items, you will have far less to pack. Not only does this mean you will require fewer boxes for packing, you may even save yourself from multiple journeys between your new and old homes as you can fit everything in one go. By using this method and clearing out your home before you move, you can save time, fuel, & money for boxes. Hiring a removals service will also be cheaper as you may hire them for less hours.
When you arrive at your new home, you will have a brand-new blank slate to put all your items which “spark joy” into. Marie Kondo often stresses how important it is to discard and donate all your unwanted before you store the items you want, so make sure you have done this so that unpacking is as easy and hassle free as possible.
