How to Keep Your Employees Safe in the Workplace

However, what’s even more important is paying attention to your staff and making sure your employees are happy and safe during the time they spend at work. Keeping them safe is vital to your success, but also for their own health, so here are a few ways to ensure everyone working for you is safe and sound.
The first step towards establishing safety in the workplace is assessing the possible risks and determining how life-threatening they are. Maintaining safety and health of your staff at the highest level is a must for an employer, so keep that in mind from day one.
In order to assess the risks adequately, consult an expert and cover every possible situation. You can do this on your own as well – all you need to do is identify risk factors that could endanger your employees, evaluate how serious they are, make records of your discoveries and, in the end, take actions to prevent accidents and injuries. Of course, you should keep conducting such assessments from time to time, updating your results and taking new preventive measures.
Once you’ve established weak or potentially dangerous points in the workplace, it’s time to address your staff and explain what you’ve found. Establishing an open communication and letting them know what’s going on is essential for preparing them for risks that might occur. Give them full reports and tell them what they can do to keep themselves safe.
After that, try to raise awareness of the problems – investigate similar cases that have occurred in the past, look for causes, find a couple of sustainable solutions and get as many people involved as possible. Provide adequate working conditions
Your employees need to be safe and sound while at work, and this means it’s up to you to provide them with adequate working conditions and make sure they have everything they need. Protective gear needs to be clearly marked and within the reach of every single employee, and the same goes for fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, water hoses and eyewash stations as well, so stack your workplace with as many of these as possible – after all, you can never be too safe!
Finally, you need to provide your staff with adequate and quality safety clothing that’s going to be their first line of defense in a hazardous situation. This clothing is a must nowadays and even regulated by the law, and you need to have enough safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, respiratory masks and face shields at all times.
Organize training sessions and drills
The most practical way to show your staff what kinds of risks they’re facing is by organizing training sessions and drills. These will teach them what to do and how to act in a risky situation, giving them theoretical and practical knowledge that might save their lives. Relying on teaching guides is another great idea – those dealing with fire, for instance, could be quite helpful in the long run – that could easily make a difference between life and death.
Organizing practical drills and simulating real-life situations will take this knowledge to a whole new level. These should be organized at least twice a year and constantly updated, so that your staff learns how to react in different situations instead of only one. Also, divide your employees in teams and teach them how to help their team members and co-workers survive a fire, an earthquake, a terrorist attack and other risks.
