How do you get rid of anxiety or how can I feel less anxious? This google search is happening more and more often, particularly now we are in a pandemic. Even amongst people who never really suffered from anxiety before we are hearing of them experiencing anxious episodes most likely driven by job insecurity and general uncertainty on when things will return to “normal”. The worst part of this is how much it impacts our sleep. Take it from me, I have anxiety which has definitely gotten worse the older I have become with more responsibilities, external life pressures and now a lockdown to top it all off, I found it almost impossible to get to sleep. Spending many a night worrying about this or thinking about that and not being able to switch off, relax and fall into a delightful slumber. My lack of sleep was seriously impacting my life and just making my anxiety even worse. I needed help! As with many of you, I took to google to see if there were any natural remedies that could help calm my anxiety at night.  That’s when CBD oil for anxiety popped up. Along with some other suggestions, I tried CBD oil and it really worked so I wanted to spread the word and explain more about it here!

What is CBD?

Firstly, for those of you who have never heard of CBD here’s a little explainer for you. CBD stands for Cannabidoil, one of the naturally occurring chemical compounds (cannabinoids) found in hemp and marijuana. The other one that you may have heard of is THC. But, unlike THC, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound so it does not make you feel “high” and it is legal in the UK. In order to be compliant with UK regulation, most CBD products are derived from hemp rather than marijuana as it contains a much higher concentration of CBD and trace amounts of THC.

CBD is believed to have a range of beneficial effects. Research, although still a tricky area given CBD’s association with cannabis, indicates that it can be a helpful natural remedy for anxiety and insomnia (perfect!). This is because CBD apparently interacts with our serotonin receptors and other receptors responsible for controlling fear and anxiety so encouraging calm and promoting relaxation when there is excessive anxiety.  So this suggests that CBD does not just help you sleep, but that the reason it helps you get to sleep is that it helps with the underlying anxiety itself.

What is the best way to take CBD?

CBD can be taken a number of ways, but one of the most popular and my chosen path (particularly when taking it before bed), is CBD oil. CBD oil is one of the most effective ways to take CBD as, unlike other CBD edibles, such as CBD chocolate or CBD gummies which have to pass through your digestive system, some of the CBD is absorbed immediately into your bloodstream by way of the artery under your tongue. This means that the effects of the CBD will be felt more quickly.  Plus, CBD oil is more concentrated and so tends to be stronger per serving. This avoids you having to gobble down a whole bar of chocolate for a comparable dosage of CBD!

When you are taking CBD oil for sleep, I’d strongly suggest (based on my experience), that you take it regularly, each night and make it part of your sleep routine. I now clamber into bed each night and drop a pipette of CBD oil under my tongue where I hold it for just under a minute then swallow – within an hour or so I am in the land of nod!

Which CBD oil should I get?

There is quite a lot of choice of CBD oils you could go for, but I landed on Paso. Not only is their brand very much in keeping with my vibe, but I really love their oral oil drops. They have worked absolute wonders for me and my sleep! One thing to point out, though, they come in three strengths and the stronger ones do have a more bitter hemp taste so if you are not a fan of that, stick to the lower strength one or try their flavoured spray which conceals that taste nicely 🙂

What’s the best dosage of CBD?

In terms of what is the best or correct CBD dosage for anxiety this will completely depend on your preference. We are all different and so the CBD will affect each of us in different ways. For example, whilst I take my CBD oil for sleep, you might find that it works best for you during the day as it actually gives you more energy. This is why you need to test it for yourself and see how it helps you and what dose suits you best.

Hopefully this has been helpful and you, too, will be able to feel less anxious and sleep again. It really has been a game changer for me and my nearest and dearest around me!
