“We offer obeisance to the three-eyed One (Lord Siva) who is fragrant and who nourishes all the living beings; may He liberate me from death, for immortality, even as the cucumber is severed from its bondage (of the creeper).”

In the Rig Veda, Lord Shiva is addressed as tryambakam, meaning the one who has three eyes. The third eye opens because of His deeper meditation and japa. It is said that Lord Shiva realized and experienced spiritual bliss while in meditation. And it was the time when His third eye opened. Prayers to Shiva include not just desires for material possessions but for liberation from the pangs of these material miseries that we have been experiencing since we were born. This is called a spiritual awakening. When we are awakened spiritually, we need not strive harder for material happiness or possession. They come on their own. Story behind Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra:

Desiring to have a son, Mrikandu a sage with his wife Marudmati mediated on the beautiful form of Lord Shiva for His blessings. Lord Shiva, pleased with their devotion, fulfilled their desire with a condition that they need to choose a foolish son set to live longer OR an intelligent son who would live a shorter life. The couple chose the latter. Soon a male child was born and was named Markandeya.  Mrikandu and Marudmati always worried about him as he grew up. When Markandeya turned sixteen, he realized his parents hid something from him. Finally, his father had to reveal the truth.  However, Markandeya devoted to Lord Shiva began chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra seated in front of a Shivling.

Once, the god of death Yamraj arrived to take him along but Markandeya started chanting the mantra rigorously and embraced the Shiva Ling tightly. Lord Yamraj to arrest Markandeya slipped the noose which accidentally dropped onto the shivling. This act angered Lord Shiva and He at once took away the life of Yamraj, creating a disturbance in the Deva Loka. Requested by the gods, Lord Shiva brought Yamraj back to life on a condition that Markandey be untouched as he will be immortal. This episode shows that chanting this great mantra protects you from untimely death and the perpetual cycle of birth and death (Moksha).
